Being KDE fun for some years, last summer I have switched to Gnome for some reasons (one of the main reason was LM, who is, being famous for his persuasiveness, proved to be totally irresponsible for the consequences of actions by the followers, especially if they are lazy and arrogant enough). One of the most annoying part of Gnome is it’s system setting menu design, which is far less consistent and intuitive then Control Center in KDE. By default, on latest Ubuntu Interpid, the lowest value for ‘Put display to sleep when inactive for:’ is 11 minutes. How to make it lower? The solution is:
- Go to screensaver settings, change ‘Regard the computer as idle after’ as low as necessary.
- Go back to Power Management Preferences, and the minimal value will change from 11 min to the value, equal to that one, set at step 1, plus 1 min. This is the logic behind.
Other annoying thing is blinking cursor in Gnome Terminal. It is easy to get rid of it by uncheking ‘Cursor blinks in text fields’ in Keyboard Preferences window. In the same application, I had problem with Ctr – key functionality: with two keyboard (default english + russian) layouts, pressing Ctrl + a key prints non-english symbol instead of performing some standard action (like ^+V or ^+C). I had to play a bit with the list of layouts (Keyboard Preferences – Layouts) by simply adding / removing layouts until the bug disappeared.
